4 protein myths vs. the published research

Gym protein lore spreads faster than the papers behind it. In 2024, researchers published a review in JISSN that walks through the most common protein questions and misconceptions against the trial evidence [1]. Four of its conclusions collide with things you'll hear in any locker room.

Myth 1: "Your body can only use 30 g of protein per meal"

The review cites trial evidence that an acute dose of 100 g of protein is utilized by the body, with the anabolic response to a large protein meal lasting more than 12 hours [1]. Digestion isn't a bucket that overflows at 30 grams — larger doses are absorbed and used over a longer window. Where the number came from is understandable (older studies measured muscle protein synthesis peaking around modest doses), but "peaks earlier" and "wasted after 30 g" are very different claims.

Myth 2: "You have one hour after lifting, or the workout is wasted"

The strict post-workout "anabolic window" doesn't survive contact with the data: muscle protein synthesis remained sensitized to protein consumed 24–27 hours after exercise in young healthy adults [1]. Training raises your muscle's responsiveness to protein for at least a day — the shaker in the gym parking lot is a convenience, not a deadline.

Myth 3: "High protein wrecks your kidneys"

In healthy, exercise-trained people, the review reports that intakes of 3.2–4.4 g per kg of body weight per day — four to five times the RDA — produced no significant changes in clinical safety markers, and that no published evidence links higher-protein diets to kidney disease in healthy individuals [1]. The italics matter: healthy. For people who have kidney disease, protein intake is genuinely a medical matter — that decision belongs with a physician or dietitian, not a blog, ours included.

Myth 4: "Plant protein can't build muscle"

The review concludes plant-based protein sources can produce similar training and body-composition adaptations to animal protein, provided enough total essential amino acids and leucine are consumed [1]. Animal proteins are "complete" (all nine essential amino acids in one food) while many single plant foods aren't [2] — but across a day of mixed plant foods, or with a blended plant protein powder, the amino acids add up. The muscle doesn't check your protein's passport; it checks the amino acids.

Why myths like these persist

Each one contains a fossil of a real finding — a synthesis curve, a hormone spike, a renal caution that applies to a clinical population — flattened into a rule that's easier to repeat than the paper. It's the same reason we cite sources at the bottom of every post: the details are the difference between science and folklore.
