How much protein do people need? What the official numbers say

Read this first. This article reports what published reference documents say — nothing more. It is general information, not medical or nutrition advice, and no number below is a recommendation about what you should eat. The documents themselves are population references written for healthy people; your number is a conversation for a physician, dietitian, or other qualified health provider.

"How much protein do I need?" is probably the most-searched question in nutrition, and most answers on the internet are someone's opinion wearing a lab coat. The honest answer is that several official and peer-reviewed reference numbers exist, they were written for different purposes, and they don't fully agree. So instead of picking one and selling it, here is the whole shelf — who published each number, what it actually means, and why they differ.

The government baseline

The U.S. reference document is the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) report from the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academies). It sets the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein in healthy adults at 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. By the report's own definition, the RDA is the average daily intake sufficient to meet the nutrient requirement of nearly all (97–98%) healthy individuals — it was derived from nitrogen-balance studies, which measure the point where the body stops losing more protein than it takes in [1].

The same report also publishes a much wider band: the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR), which puts protein at 10–35% of daily calories. That's the range the report associates with adequate nutrition and reduced chronic-disease risk — and it's telling that the ceiling of the official range sits far above what the RDA alone would work out to [1].

One more government number shows up in daily life: the FDA's Daily Value used on U.S. food labels, which is 50 grams of protein per day for adults and children age 4 and up, based on a 2,000-calorie reference diet. It's a labeling convention, not an individualized target — and the FDA doesn't even require the percent Daily Value for protein to appear on most labels unless the product makes a protein claim [2].

What "grams per kilogram" works out to

Because the RDA is expressed per kilogram of body weight, the document's own definition implies some arithmetic. Purely as an illustration of what the units mean — not as a target for anyone — the RDA's 0.8 g/kg applied to a 68 kg (150 lb) reference adult works out to about 54 grams per day, which is in the neighborhood of the FDA's 50-gram labeling value [1, 2]. That is the deficiency-prevention baseline the documents describe for healthy adults; it is not a verdict on what any particular person should do.

What sports and aging researchers publish

Peer-reviewed position stands — consensus documents from professional bodies — publish higher ranges for specific populations, because they're answering a different question than the RDA:

Why the numbers disagree

The spread from 0.8 to 2.0 isn't sloppiness — the documents are measuring different things. The RDA answers "how little is enough to prevent deficiency in nearly everyone healthy." The position stands answer "what intakes are associated with training adaptations or preserving muscle with age." A 2024 peer-reviewed critique in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition makes the argument explicitly: the RDA is best read as a floor, not an optimum, and the paper reports no evidence of harm from substantially higher intakes in healthy people — while acknowledging that people with existing kidney disease are a medically distinct case [7]. That "in healthy people" qualifier is the entire ballgame, which brings us to:
